Statement of intent
For this project my theme is textures and I am going to research lots of different types of texture. For example leaves, fruits, metal glass to show a comparison of man-made verses natural objects. I will then research photographers that have used texture in their work or have work that create texture. The way I am going to work is to show step by step my thinking process and development, I will begin by creating a mind map as this will allow my ideas to flow and help me create a starting point. Then I will look at photographers and maybe artists.
To show my work I have built my own photography website and I am using the software called Weebly. I found the website easy to use because I have all ready used this website making browsers before. This website looks professional and will allow me to show of my photography project.
For my final images I will choose my best images and put them in a final gallery at the end of my project page these images will be my personal response to the theme texture.
I chose to look at Imogen Cunningham's black and white photography as her work focuses on texture and I feel that black and white imagery not only brings out the texture but also looks professional. I also hope to look at the work on Marc Anderson and in particular his series of patterns in nature. I feel that his work is abstract and beautiful and will inspire my own photography.
My first thoughts about this theme was to take images of fruits like apples, peppers and cabbages. As I can control the shoot as it will be a studio set up I will be able to focus on the close up of the detail that fruit show. I also want to create images of man-made objects such as metal cheese graters, cars cans/tins , car wheels and much more these images my require me to work outside.
When I chose this theme, my initial thoughts were of natural textures such as fruit and feathers after thinking about the project title more thoroughly I realize there are so many more routes for my work to go down such as man-made textures how I could combine and contrast the different elements of texture captured.
I will do studio shots to begin with as the images I would like to take are close-ups using telescopic lens I will need to go outside to get a different set of images.
To show progression throughout my work I will start by photographing the fruits and plants that I can bring into school I will then develop these images further by taking more ideas from them and editing them in Photoshop. I then hope to venture from within Manchester and gather texture images from the environment around me. I already have a lot of ideas running though my mind for this project which will propel me in the right direction. The one area I would like to focus on is the nature of natural texture.
I have three months to produce my Website of work towards the production of my final piece. I aim to complete my initial research within 3 weeks and start photographing by the 4th week in order to give me the time I need to show progression. I will then continue to develop my work in Photoshop and be prepared to go out again with my camera and capture new images to enhance my project. When I have completed the project, I will select my best photography outcomes and display them in my final gallery. I can develop ideas in photo pea and then refine and focus on one particular area to gain the best finish.
I will then continue to develop my work in Photoshop/photo pea and be prepared to go out again with my camera and capture next images to my project. I would like to get images as weather such as fog, sunny, rain, snow. When I have completed the project. I will select my best photography outcomes and display then in my gallery.
As my project progresses I will use annotations throughout my web page labeling my ideas and development clearly. This will also help me to reflect and refine the work I produce. I will mainly seek advice from my tutors and my peers on how to make my work better, as I’m always aiming to push myself to new levels. I will also watch tutorials and demonstrations and find my own style as well to help me develop my skills and knowledge of Photoshop. After the creation of my final portfolio I will write a final evaluation on the project as a whole, reflecting on what went well and what I would do differently or change given the time.

Imogen Cunningham research
Context
"I have researched images from Imogen Cunningham from the internet"
AMERICAN, 1883 - 1976 ) Imogen Cunningham occupies a singular position in the history of American art of the twentieth century. For over half the history of photography, she explored- with innovation and a new perspective- all the major traditions associated with the medium as fine art. She has been most widely acclaimed for the photographs made during the 1920s and 1930s, particularly close-up images of plants and nudes. She also made portraits which are now considered classics in photography, including images of Alfred Stieglitz, Spencer Tracy, and Martha Graham. She was a founding member of the West Coast-based Group f.64, which championed an un-manipulated, direct approach with the camera, or “straight” photography. Her photographs are represented in major collections and museums around the world. The Weston Gallery represents the Imogen Cunningham Trust and have vintage, modern as well as posthumous prints available. Please contact us for acquisitions.

Composition
Imogen Cunningham uses contrast in her image as she uses a light and dark colour to make the image stand out. The light on the image makes you focus on the petal in the photograph against the black background which gives a monochromatic effect to the image. The sweet spot is in the bottom left corner on a grid, the eye is drawn straight to the center where the flower is. In the foreground the flower catches the eye of the person looking at the image because the background is black and darker so the flower stands out because it is white. The image has curved and spiral lines created by the petals and leaves of the plant, which go down into the center of the flower, leading your eye again into the center. The contrast brings out a big difference between the black of the background and the white of the flower which brings out the form and shape of the flower. In my opinion, I think this image is a studio shot because the image has a black background which tells me it was most likely taken in a studio with studio light so we can see the petals, tripod for the camera to keep it still and level the lighting will have been controlled and the placement of the object .
Connection
I am interested in researching photographers who have done black and white images. I'm looking at the work of Imogen Cunningham because she has a unique photography style she focuses on plants and black and white images. I like how she takes images of different plants and how she does black and white images, I like how she uses rule of thirds and how she crops the images. Her work stands out to me compared to other photographers as her style gives a professional finish that I would like to gain in my work.
Comment
In my opinion I like her work because the contrast and the shades that are created in her photography. The images stand out she also has a unique style of taking pictures like cropping the images and the rule of thirds this also another reason I like her photography. She uses a shallow depths of field which is really good as the eye focuses on the object not the background, personally I don't like black and white images I preferer colour , however I will use this style and finish in my project.
Research Grass
COMPOSITION
In this image I can see the photographer has used the rule of thirds because there are two trees in the left hand slide that sit on the sweet spot. In my opinion I think that the tree really stands out against the swirly grass because the trees and the grass have very contrasting colours. The light orange golden grass against the dark brown tree trunk makes you look into the left hand corner where you can see a small triangle shape of blue as the sky. To me the grass looks like an illusion as it swirls drawing you into the picture which reminds me of the flow of a river. The grass takes up most of the image with the trees being placed in the mid ground then the touch of blue is the background. There is a light hint of green coming from the branches in the mid ground but it is very subtle. The way the image has been taken looks as though the trees are slanted I think the photographer would not have been able to use a tripod due to the ground not being level. The grass looks like it continues up a hill as there is only a small amount of sky captured.
Connection
I've chosen to look at a number of photographers to get my project started. I'm especially interested in learning more about photographers who have used trees and grass. I'm looking at this work because he has a unique style of photography that focuses on the direction of the grass. By documenting something that should be perfect but isn't, they force us to reconsider. I'm going to use this work as inspiration for my own photography by taking photographs of natural textures of grass and trees. To enhance my photography, I'll use close-ups and the rule of thirds and I will play with the idea of contrasting colours in the image..
Comment
In my view, this work is good because of the contrast and direction of the grass in the photograph which makes the photograph stand out. They photographer has a unique style such as using the rule of thirds, holding the camera at an awkward angle which makes the photograph look a lot better, which is another reason for why I like this work.
Research for Roe Ethage
Context
To start my photography project and to gain inspiration, I am going to research 3 different photographers, the first photographer I am going to research is Roe Etheridge. I have looked on the internet and found the following information
“Roe Ethridge (American, born 1969) takes equally from his work as a commercial photographer, and artist. Blurring the lines that separate the two, Ethridge creates images that are simultaneously generic and intimate, often treading between humor and cynicism. Functioning in tandem, these motivations coalesce into an ongoing investigation into the mechanics of photographs, and their ability to both retreat into the personal, and expand to relay collective experiences. In 2016, the Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati mounted the first comprehensive survey of Ethridge’s work in an American Museum, titled Nearest Neighbor. Other solo exhibitions include Shelter Island, FOAM, Amsterdam, 2016 and Le Consortium, Dijon, 2012, traveled to Museum Leuven, Leuven, 2012. Ethridge has additionally participated in numerous group exhibitions including The Poetics of Place: Contemporary Photographs from the Met Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2016, Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2016, Perfect Likeness: Photography and Composition, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, 2015, The 2013 Lyon Biennale, Lyon, The Anxiety of Photography, Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, 2012, New Photography 2010: Roe Ethridge, Alex Prager, Amanda Ross- Ho, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the 2008 Whitney Biennial, among others.

Composition
The barrel has been placed in the foreground that creates a curved leading line round the image, making the eye look at the rest of the photograph. Then the fruit bowl and fruit is in the mid ground this is displaying lots of colour and texture from the fruit itself, this is in contrast to the plain stained light wood in the background. I feel this has been created this way make it stands out.
When looking at the image you can see that the composition has been thought about when placing the fruits as there are lots of curved objects, the bowl is curved the barrel is curved and the fruit is curved the banana has been placed on its side to show the curved too.
The photographer has tightly cropped the image to me to allow the viewer to focus on the fruit bowl and not to be distracted by other objects, I think the photographer wants us to focus on the mold. Most fruit bowls are attractive and look appealing however this fruit bowl has been displayed with mold showing on the fruit and pieces of fruit squashed and gone brown. There are strawberries with mold on in the front of the white bowl and the bowl even has a smudge of red from the strawberries.
Connection
I've chosen to look at a number of photographers to get my project started. I'm especially interested in learning more about photographers who have used fruits in their work. I'm looking at Roe Ethridge's work because he has a unique style of photography that focuses on rotting fruit. By documenting something that should be perfect but isn't. I might take inspiration for my own photography by creating a time lapses of rotting fruit. To enhance my photography, I'll use close-ups and create a studio set up and will use the rule of thirds when taking my images. I will also use a contrasting background.
Comment
In my opinion, when I look at this image, I can see that Roe Etheridge has used the rule of thirds, because the peach sits on the ‘sweet spot’, in the top right hand side. This makes us look at that particular piece of fruit. Using this technique to highlight an area of the image is something that I will try and use in my work. I will also use a plain background as this will help the fruit stand out.
I like the image because at first one thinks its a perfectly positioned fruit bowl with delicious fruit but in reality the fruit has gone off and is no longer edible.

Man made
Shoot plan
For my project on ‘Texture’, my starting point is looking at a range of different textures, both man made and natural Texture. I am going to start by taking photographs of natural textures such as fruit & veg, flowers, leaves, spider webs and shells. I am then going to explore other man made textures such as chain, metal objects, nails and glass. To help inspire me I am going to look at 3 photographers who focus on texture in their work is Roe Etheridge
I am also developing ideas by creating a mind map and mood boards
I can use my phone camera and an app called snap seed
I am going to use a range of different cameras and equipment so that I can explore/develop my photography skills. In school we use Canon DSLR cameras so that we learn to use the manual settings. Before we take a photograph we have to set the white balance to the middle (WB,ISO, Exposure etc.) The reason we do this is because we are learning the skills of taking photos and being able to control the picture lighting and how it focus
My own phone camera is pretty good for taking photos
I will be taking photo of leaf's and pc parts for my moon board
For my next shoot I am going to focus on taking a set of images based on mirrors and flowers
I will try to use natural lighting
I will use the natural daylight if taking photos outside, however, I might experiment with shining a camera torch onto an object so that I can get a better effect.

Leaves
Berries
fruit and veg
Best:
This is my best images as you can see all the details of the cabbage leaves, to me it creates an image of a mini jungle with a big river going though it. I like how the colour of the cabbage leaf is shown going from light green to a really dark green. The image shows how tactile the leaf is which is what I wanted to capture.
Worse: This is my worst as you can see the back ground and by that ruins the image , the detail of the cabbage isn't showing out as much. I will need to remember to look properly through my view finder and see what is in the background as I was not as close to the cabbage as I thought.
Edits on Photoshop
Pomegranate
Mushroom
BEST
To me this is my best image as it is a close up of the mushroom and a lot of detail can be shown. The colours are subtle the composition works well too. I like how I have captured the foreground blurred and the mid ground in focus capturing the creases of the mushroom. The triangle of colour in the background reminds me of the grass image I looked at in my research. The idea of having the object take up most of the picture with a small amount of a contrasting colour coming through. |
Worst
I feel this is my worst image as it is not in focus and looks blurry. Even though the detail can be seen and the compositions is good I feel it would have looked better if the image was sharp and in focus. Some of my peers however liked this image as they said it created a soft appearance and they like the colour contrats. |
Red cabbage
Best
The framing makes you focused on the patterns of the cabbage and creates a leading line from the right corner to the left top corner. I have really though about composition on this image and how I can make the image look more interesting. The detail is sharp as the colour is bold against the pale background I have used.

Worst: I do not like the composition of this image as the cabbage in the background looks out of place, even though I have captured texture the image it self is boring and lacks creativity.
Apple
Best
In this image you can see the shadow of the apples and also you can see the reflection of the light. Because of the composition I feel this is a strong image and shows texture well.

Worst: This is my worst image because it is over exposed making the image appear to white. You can still see texture but because the camera setting were not right this becomes a weak image.
Grape fruit
Best
You can see the veins of the grape fruit, I did this by shining a lamp at the back of it. I like how the edges are darker and how it creates a dramatic look. I feel this is my best image as the detail is visible showing texture in a different way and creative way.

Worst
I was to close to the fruit the camera could not focus causing the image to be out of focus and blurry.

Edits on Photoshop
Cauliflower
Best
This is my best because you can see the little detail of the cauliflower and how there is two colours that stand out to me your eye is instantly drawn to the green leaf but as soon as you look at the image again your eye is drawn to the white lumpy part of the cauliflower. My composition is strong as I have captured the curve of the leaf and I have created a leading line going from the bottom of the leaf to the right hand corner of the image, |
Spider webs
Best vs Worse
This is my best because you can see the water drop lets
This is my worse just because you can barely see the spider web line because I was to close.
Spider webs + snow
Snowy Grass
Snowy Gate
This is my best image because it looks like a brick wall that has white paint on it and it has just snowed
Ice Drops
MAN MADE
Trumpet
Best: you cant see the back ground. Also you can see I have zoomed in on the best side of the object
|
worst: I made this image way too dark if it was lighter it would have been the best image
|
Black and white
Nails
BEST: It makes the middle nails stand out more because the others are blurry but the middle 1 isn't
WORST: There are to much nails that are blurry
Chain
Best: this image you can see the reflection of the bright light and also you can see some parts of the chain is blurred and some are not this makes it so when you look at this photo for the first time your eye is drown to the chains that are in focused
worst: the lighting is off and also the image is blurry.
Case
BEST: the case is reflecting the light making it seem its the sun light that is reflecting.
worst; you can see the background and also im to close to the case making it blur
WOODEN DOG
Best
It is the best because it isn't over exposing and it has the right lighting on it
worst
It is the worst because the lighting is making it seem dark and you can also see that is was starting to get blurry
METAL BRUSH
best
It is the best because the brush is like a forest I made it look like this by zooming in on the metal lines
worst
This is my worst image because there is too much back ground and I didn't think to much of the composition
PENCIL CASE
BRUSH
best
This is my best because the paint brush is making the light reflect the metal bar
worst
This is my worst because the lighting is making the image seem dark
wires
This is my BEST image because the shadow is making the knitting kit stand out
This is my WORST image because I was on the wrong settings and the knitting kit is blurry
metal scrub
newspaper
best
This is my BEST image because the shadow isn't making it stand out too much and also there is no back ground you can see
worst
This is my WORST image because the image is too bleached and there is a background
that you can see your eyes would just look at the back ground strait away.
that you can see your eyes would just look at the back ground strait away.
CARS
best
This is my BEST image because you can see the frozen water droplets which are looking like scales
worst
This is my worst image because there is too much background. If it was cropped the image would have appeared completley different and may have looked interesting as It would be an image that you would wonder what the object is.
BRICKWALL
Best
This is my Best image because I have got a strong leading line that draws you into a vanishing point. The colour contrast is strong and the way I have captured texture makes the image appear interesting.
Worst
This is my worst image because it is to plain and you don't know what your supposed to look at as you can see to much background your eye is distracted from the wooden table. If I would have cropped the image it would appear better I also feel as though the colour is slightly dull.
brick wall + feather
steal bars
Buildings
Final shoot plan
For the final set of texture images these is going to be manmade technology like CPUs keyboards anything got to do with computers or tech
I would like to take photos of the welding, CPU and motherboards because I have all the equipment to do all of that. I would open up my keyboard and take some pictures of the motherboards or my ps4 controller I can do lots of stuff. I would use a manual cannon camera to take these images I would also take the picture's from a birds eye view, a worm eye view and a close up I feel like taking picture's of mother boards are interesting because of the detail of the stuff that is on it like the SSD, RAM, also some mother boards have a built in fan and it is a man made texture it is also unique as I am the only person doing it in my class.

Evaluation
My main theme was texture I decided to explore the different types of texture such as manmade and natural . To begin with I explored the textures that was around me and created a studio set up and I was able to look at fruit and vegetables in detail. But fruit did not interest me even though the photographs are good it was not giving me the ideas I wanted.
I thought the theme texture was good so I decided to to take images of objects that I liked such as commuter parts and objects from computers. I found that the images of computer parts looked different and showed a lot of detail. This was a theme I liked and my images were of a good standard. I could see that the images of the inside of the computer would work well as a final piece. I used Photoshop to change the colour and copied the images and they began creating patterns. I liked the idea of the photographs becoming a pattern and looking nothing like the original picture. When I created my final piece I liked the response I received from other people as they were shocked that the image was actually a computer part. I explored this idea further and created images that I was pleased with.
I then decided that I should not limit myself as I had taken good images for natural texture. This is where my research of 3 photographers at the beginning of my project helped to inspire my work. By using the ideas of close ups and the colours captured in the photographers work helped me when preparing for my photoshoots. As I had loots of ideas for composition, my images of the spider web and snow worked really well but I felt they did not work well when changed as the original images appeared better.
Because of lock down I was able to use the app Photopia to manipulate my images .I really enjoyed my Photopia work the best tool I used was the blur tool, because I feel it makes the image stand out.
However when we were back in school and we were able to use the computers I found the use of Photoshop the most interesting because I enjoyed editing my work and also improving it, I have learnt how to copy and paste layers and use the blur tool, change colours and create different effects, gaining the skills I have learnt on Photoshop has been really enjoyable as I am always pushing myself further. If I was given more time I feel I could have done better in photoshop I hope to gain more confidence in my next project by watching tutorials and spending more time experiment and manipulating my ideas I feel this will help me loads in my photography journey.
I have learnt loads form this first project I have learnt how to use a camera on manual and the microscopic lens. I had to research photographers and create analysis on their work. I've learnt how to be critical of the work I create and take advise from other people. I've looked at different websites, I have created my own website on Weebly which I feel has helped me create a professional looking portfolio of work.
I did encounter many problems through out the project but I solved them, I solved one of my main problem which was asking for help. By over coming different obstacles I feel more confident and know I can do better in my next project.
